The GroundGrabba Back Story
I didn’t set out to reinvent the tent peg, I just had enough of hammering in 22 heavy duty pegs made out of steel reinforcement aka “reo” to hold our 6m x 9m tarp.
You know, after gripping, swinging and smashing a lump hammer onto 22
long pegs into clay, my swinging hand was cramping and arm felt kind of like I’d just had an arm wrestle with Arnold Schwarzenegger, not to mention the swelling on my throbbing painful and slowly turning purple bruised left hand from where I’d smashed it several times. You could say I always had a smashing time camping! Grin.
But the worst part for me was packing up. Pulling all 22 of those buggers out I reckon. One of my last tedious and disliked jobs packing up, usually sweating laboriously away in the hot sun now that there was no shade from the tarp. I’m sure you’ve experienced that at some stage haven’t you?
The long pegs were gripping like wet sh*t to a
blanket…no, actually much much worse than that. Trying to twist and pull them
at the same time with all my force felt like I was going to give myself a
hernia.
My partner Susu couldn’t help
other than telling me to ‘shut up’ with my swearing and bitching. By the end of
it, I was stuffed and needed another holiday, not go back to work. Then
although I was the one doing the heavy yakka, Susu would complain that camping
was too hard when it came to pulling out the pegs stage, and that next holiday
should be at a resort. Go figure?
Anyway I was over it! There had to be a another
way.
So it got me thinking. What labour saving device can help? What common
device or equipment do we use today that can help make this job easier and
faster?
Even back then I’d take my Makita 18v cordless
with me camping. You see, I’m a tradie and like to fix things straight up or
improvise a fix…. and I found out that I wasn’t the only one who did that too
along with taking solar panels, battery, inverter and a 12V fridge.
So how could I use my cordless to help with
pegging out my tarp?
Then it dawned on me. Why not create a screw for
the ground?
But then, why not just use a coach bolt or long
roofing type screw from Bunnings?
Great idea right? So the next Saturday I went to
grab a sausage with onion…. Sorry I mean onion with sausage and whilst there
a long coach bolt and roofing screw to test screwing them into the ground.
I tried them in a variety of grounds but overall
wasn’t impressed with the grip. Well, That kinda made sense, after all they are
made for timber not the ground right?
So I set my mind to work thinking of a design
that would be the perfect screw-in peg for the ground…too easy right?
But where to start? I didn’t know where but I
came up with the idea of hiring a 3D designer who could model what was in my
head and then I could get it 3D printed. Well that sounded simple enough until
the very first prototype got printed up and looked crap because the design file
had errors and the 3D printer folk said it wasn’t their job to check and fix
files…. $350 down the drain and back to the designer.
I wish I could say that was the only money down
the drain but it wasn’t. Little did I know that it was only the begging a huge
financial drain. Through my inexperience and naivety costly stuff ups like that
happened one after the other but I started to wisen up.
I had no one holding my hand helping me. I was
learning by trial and error. Trust me, lots of trials and lots and lots of
errors.
You’ve probably heard stories about people who
invent things and how the end result is nothing like the first prototype
haven’t you? Well when I started I was going to be the exception to the rule. I
knew so clearly so doggedly and so determined that I’d nail it in one!
But as it turned out clearly I didn’t! There was
many a time I had a new design only to be told it wasn’t mass producible or it
wasn’t viable or some other major problem. And many, many a time my own testing
found the design flawed, just not good enough.
Several times we were faced with the project
blowing our savings, going broke and close to giving up. It frustrated &
deeply worried both Susu and I no end.
Some 8 designers, 4 engineers, 3 1/2 years, 26
versions, almost going broke 3 times (or just one long time) and sending Susu
off to the mines to work for a year so we could cover our rent and bills,
eventually we cracked it… our solution was born.
Now, you can use your tradie quality cordless
drill to take the effort out of the time consuming, old relentless hammering
in, hand and back breaking task.
And you’re probably one of those experienced campers who have a means of charging your cordless drill whilst camping aren’t you? But if not you can still use a 19mm wrench, but…. you may as well get the old pegs and mallet out again.
But more, if you’re looking for real bite, real
ground anchoring that will hold your expensive tent, large tarps, annexe’s and
pop ups in the strongest of wind gusts, in grounds soft as sand to hard like
clay then you’re looking for more grip than a tent peg can provide.
Enter the drill driven ground anchor.
Ground anchors afford a heavy duty grip solution
that even screw in pegs simply cannot achieve.** See RV Daily’s test results
here
GroundGrabbas have been purposefully designed
and made for just this reason.
When simple low level pegging just isn’t secure
enough GroundGrabba is your solution.
Say goodbye to back breaking, hand smashing
pegging. Say goodbye to the low grip screw in tent peg and say hello to the
extreme ground anchoring of GroundGrabba TM.
GGs come in three varieties to cater for most of
your exact ground anchoring needs:
GroundGrabba Pro General purpose
for most ground types
GroundGrabba Pro II For extreme
anchoring in soft sand to hard clay
GroundGrabba Lite. For sand, soft and
lose ground
Make no mistake GroundGrabbas grip so strong
that you’ll need a quality cordless of at least 18v with plenty of torque.
To make things even easier our Pro series can
even be driven in with your largest cordless impact wrench without fear of
snapping them. And thanks to our secret process of heat treating the carbon
steel we are so confident with how tough we’ve made them that If you do manage
to break them, we will replace them as we offer a lifetime warranty against
breaking or wearing them out.*
Why do GroundGrabbas anchor so well? Let me
explain… This example maybe a little lame but…..
It’s kind of like a tick versus a mosquito.
A tick burrows and sticks it’s hooks under your
skin so when you go to pull it out it doesn’t want to let go, it hooks with
such ferocity your skin lifts up as you try and then when you do manage to
break its grip it leaves its hooks under your skin. However a mosquitos needle
like Point will just slide out.
So too for maximum grip a GroundGrabba will kind
of hook the ground and not want to let go.
You know, I hate to recall all the times in my life when I could have paid more for things initially that would have saved me in the long run but I opted for cheaper and compromise solutions. Because invariably the thing would either break or not do the job well. I’d end up paying more again to replace it with the original better model or worse, I felt like I had even less money to spend now so I’d buy another cheaper variety only to have it bite me in the bum again. Does that sound familiar?
GroundGrabbas are kind of like your Grandfathers hand me down tools. They’re quality & built to last, like tools used to be. GroundGrabbas are not just for camping either. We get great feedback from customers who use them for all types of applications from camping, holding down lightning rod arrestors, back yard trampolines, swings, garden beds, retaining walls, road barriers, temporary fencing and even light aircraft.
Often I get asked if GroundGrabbas will work in ‘this” type of ground or “that” type of ground. Just using common sense you’ll figure it out for yourself. Yes they can be used in soft sand. No they won’t go into rock. Yes you need to drill a pilot hole when driving them into hard ground. But if you’re a seasoned camper and you’ve got common sense you will figure it out easily enough. It really isn’t rocket science.
When quality maximum ground anchoring grip is important to you then there’s one solution.
GroundGrabbas really are that good.
We created a Heavy Duty Drill Driven Ground Anchor Peg that can be used for a wide variety of applications for camping , light aircraft tie downs, Jumping Castles, Outdoor Furniture, Road Construction Barriers, Temporary Fencing and even Signs.
By the way, some people incorrectly call us Ground Grabber. We can assure you we are called GroundGrabba not Ground Grabber.
All GroundGrabba heavy duty screw in pegs come with a 19mm Hex head for easy adaptation to your drill via our 19mm Hex Socket driver.
