I didn’t set out to reinvent the tent peg, I just had enough of hammering in 22 heavy duty pegs made out of steel reinforcement aka “reo” to hold our 6m x 9m tarp.

You know, after gripping, swinging and smashing a lump hammer onto 22
long pegs into clay, my swinging hand was cramping and arm felt kind of like I’d just had an arm wrestle with Arnold Schwarzenegger, not to mention the swelling on my throbbing painful and slowly turning purple bruised left hand from where I’d smashed it several times.  You could say I always had a smashing time camping! Grin.

But the worst part for me was packing up. Pulling all 22 of those buggers out I reckon. One of my last tedious and disliked jobs packing up, usually sweating laboriously away in the hot sun now that there was no shade from the tarp. I’m sure you’ve experienced that at some stage haven’t you?

The long pegs were gripping like wet sh*t to a blanket…no, actually much much worse than that. Trying to twist and pull them at the same time with all my force felt like I was going to give myself a hernia. 

My partner Susu couldn’t help other than telling me to ‘shut up’ with my swearing and bitching. By the end of it, I was stuffed and needed another holiday, not go back to work. Then although I was the one doing the heavy yakka, Susu would complain that camping was too hard when it came to pulling out the pegs stage, and that next holiday should be at a resort. Go figure?

Anyway I was over it! There had to be a another way.

So it got me thinking. What labour saving device can help? What common device or equipment do we use today that can help make this job easier and faster?

Even back then I’d take my Makita 18v cordless with me camping. You see, I’m a tradie and like to fix things straight up or improvise a fix…. and I found out that I wasn’t the only one who did that too along with taking solar panels, battery, inverter and a 12V fridge.

So how could I use my cordless to help with pegging out my tarp?
Then it dawned on me. Why not create a screw for the ground?
But then, why not just use a coach bolt or long roofing type screw from Bunnings?

Great idea right? So the next Saturday I went to grab a sausage with onion…. Sorry I mean onion with sausage and whilst there a long coach bolt and roofing screw to test screwing them into the ground.
I tried them in a variety of grounds but overall wasn’t impressed with the grip. Well, That kinda made sense, after all they are made for timber not the ground right?

So I set my mind to work thinking of a design that would be the perfect screw-in peg for the ground…too easy right?

But where to start? I didn’t know where but I came up with the idea of hiring a 3D designer who could model what was in my head and then I could get it 3D printed. Well that sounded simple enough until the very first prototype got printed up and looked crap because the design file had errors and the 3D printer folk said it wasn’t their job to check and fix files…. $350 down the drain and back to the designer. 

I wish I could say that was the only money down the drain but it wasn’t. Little did I know that it was only the begging a huge financial drain. Through my inexperience and naivety costly stuff ups like that happened one after the other but I started to wisen up.
I had no one holding my hand helping me. I was learning by trial and error. Trust me, lots of trials and lots and lots of errors.

You’ve probably heard stories about people who invent things and how the end result is nothing like the first prototype haven’t you? Well when I started I was going to be the exception to the rule. I knew so clearly so doggedly and so determined that I’d nail it in one!

But as it turned out clearly I didn’t! There was many a time I had a new design only to be told it wasn’t mass producible or it wasn’t viable or some other major problem. And many, many a time my own testing found the design flawed, just not good enough. 

Several times we were faced with the project blowing our savings, going broke and close to giving up. It frustrated & deeply worried both Susu and I no end.

Some 8 designers, 4 engineers, 3 1/2 years, 26 versions, almost going broke 3 times (or just one long time) and sending Susu off to the mines to work for a year so we could cover our rent and bills, eventually we cracked it… our solution was born.

Now, you can use your tradie quality cordless drill to take the effort out of the time consuming, old relentless hammering in, hand and back breaking task.

And you’re probably one of those experienced campers who have a means of charging your cordless drill whilst camping aren’t you? But if not you can still use a 19mm wrench, but…. you may as well get the old pegs and mallet out again.
